Understanding the Search Results

So far, so good, but how do you use the results?

The first thing to appear under the title of the page is a sentence which tells you the number of businesses we have on record which match your selections. After that, there's a reminder that international callers to Thailand should precede the telephone or fax number with 66. See Telephone Numbers below to find out more about this.

Addresses
Sois, Moos, Tambons, Amphurs, Chiangwats... How does this system work? Very logically, really. Let's start at the front door of a typical Thai house.

Outside most Thai houses is a Soi (lane) or a Thanon (road). Say the address is 18/2 Singharaj Soi 3. This translates to (Lot) 18, (House) 2. Sometimes this followed by a Moo, or a Neighbourhood; e.g., Moo 5 or Neighbourhood 5, which in turn is part of a Tambon, or Sub-District; e.g., Tambon Chang Puak or Chang Puak Sub-District. Amphurs are basically Districts, and Chiangwats are Provinces.

Prathet in Thai means country, and this website focuses on Prathet Thai, or the Kingdom of Thailand. Easy enough.

Telephone Numbers
To call a number from outside Thailand you should first dial the code for an international line in your country, then 66 for Thailand, then the area code, followed by the number you want to reach. You should also drop the first zero from the area code. For example, if the number you want to call is 053 - 416260 (our office number!), and you were in Britain, you should dial 00 66 53 416260. 00 is the code for an international line (in most countries), 66 will connect you with Thailand, 53 will direct the call to Chiang Mai, and 416260 will ring the phone next to my desk (or give you an engaged (busy) signal!).

Many large offices in Thailand have several lines, and they list their numbers as follows: If they have three lines, e.g., 416260, 416261, and 416262, they will list these numbers together in directories, business cards, etc., as 416260-2, meaning they have three lines as listed above. Numbers in Bangkok have seven digits, while those outside the Bangkok area have only six digits. Accordingly, Bangkok number 537-4611-3 means that this office can be reached by calling either 537-4611, 537-4612, or 537-4613. Within Thailand and outside of Bangkok, you must dial 02 before the seven digit number. When calling from abroad, again, drop the 0 and dial only a 2 after 66 for a Bangkok number.

Finally, mobile phone numbers in Thailand are seven digit numbers preceded by 01, the code for a mobile (or cellular) phone; e.g., 01-951-2340 (our mobile number!). Pager numbers can be dialed by calling either 161, which is an automated message asking you for (1) the pager number you want reach; and (2) your number (to be called back by the paged person). The page call is ended by punching in the # sign. Should you wish to speak to a real person, call 162 and a friendly bilingual operator will assist you.

More Information
Depending on your selection, you may see some businesses appear underlined. Clicking on the business name will take you to a page on the Thailand Yellow Pages which will give you more details about that business.

You may find a map, more contact details, a catalogue or a photograph illustrating the business, so you should consider taking a closer look when you see one - you never know what you may find there!
