World Bank: Floods in Thailand will cost 43 billion dollars

The total damage from catastrophic floods in Thailand will cost 1.36 trillion baht (more than 43 billion dollars).

Such an assessment of damages was provided by an expert of the Bangkok World Bank in Thailand Kirida Bhaopichitr, ITAR-TASS reported.

In particular, there are 94% of losses in the private sector and only 6% – in the state sector.

Bangkok has lost the oldest airport in Asia

Currently Thai authorities will have to take a difficult decision on what to do next with the oldest airport in Bangkok Don Muang: whether to restore it or to recognize the airport unsuitable for use.

The fact is that the airport was badly damaged by floods in late October – passenger and cargo terminals and the western runway were flooded and only the eastern runway escaped destruction.

People leaving for Thailand as tourists for up to 30 days will no longer need a visa, the Embassy of Thailand reported on its Web site on Thursday.

It is possible to come to Thailand from a neighboring country without a visa for up to 15 days.

Night shopping street to open in Bangkok

In Bangkok, night shopping street will be opened next week.

It has got the name “Thai Arbat” from Russian media.

Rachini-Road, in Phra Nakhon district, will become a pedestrian zone in the evenings, where street trading will be conducted.

Opening Hour is 7 p.m. – the sellers will open their concession stands with the goods.

The flow of Russian tourists in Thailand rose 8 times in July

In July 2011 almost 118 thousand Russian tourists visited Thailand, which is 8 times more than the same period last year, said Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand in Russia and CIS countries Visanu Jaroensilp.

“Such rapid growth was due to the active work of Russian tour operators, especially in Siberia and the Far East, where a huge number of charter flights were arranged.

Scientists found the bones of the mastodon species unknown to science, in Thailand

Thai paleontologists found bones of mastodon species unknown to science, a prehistoric elephant that lived here more than ten million years ago, in the northeast of Thailand, Thai media reported.

Teeth and fragments of animal bones were found by expeditions of the past five years, according to news reports citing a statement issued on Wednesday by staff of the North-East Research Institute in the Teachers University of Nakhon Ratchasima province.

Ministry of Culture of Thailand issued a statement about the ban for tourists for making Buddhist tattoos during a visit to the country.

As reported on Thursday, June 2, by Associated Press, the ministry believes that making of tattoos by adherents of other religions is unethical.
